A section through a sloping lot, showing where surface water goes A cross-section of a hillside lot. Earth has been cut away on the uphill side to form a level bench and filled on the downhill side. A house sits on the bench with its floor raised on a plinth. A channel runs along the foot of the cut face, above the house, to intercept water coming down the slope before it reaches the building. water comes from up here a channel above the house floor sits above the bench
On a slope, every drop of rain that lands above the house has to pass it. The drain belongs above the building, along the foot of the cut, and the floor sits clear of the bench. A house placed on a slope without this is not a drainage problem later; it is one immediately.
